Overview

What Is the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan?

The ID. Tiguan is Volkswagen’s new all-electric mid-size SUV. In Europe it succeeds both the ID.4 and the ID.5, two models with more than 950,000 units built, and it borrows its name from the Tiguan, Volkswagen’s best-selling model worldwide. It uses Volkswagen’s MEB+ electric architecture and is built in Emden, Germany, for the European market, where it launches in early 2027 alongside the gas, diesel and hybrid Tiguan.

The design is new from end to end. Volkswagen’s “Pure Positive” design language trades the softer crossover look of the ID.4 and ID.5 for a powerful SUV design with a strong visual presence, precise lines and tightly sculpted surfaces. Classic pull-style door handles also return.

For Denver drivers, the details worth watching are the 4MOTION all-wheel-drive version for snowy commutes and mountain weekends, towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg in European form, and a front trunk for stashing the charging cable. Whether those carry over to a US model is still to be confirmed.

The matching Retro view on the center screen can be personalized, with six Volkswagen classics to choose from in a virtual garage: Golf I, Golf II Country, Golf IV, Tiguan I, Race Touareg and Beetle.
