For the 2021 model year, the Atlas is available with 4Motion® with Active Control.  This system effectively uses intuitive software and sensors to direct power and traction to where it is needed.  In everyday driving, that will likely mean the front wheels providing the power for your 2021 Atlas.  The AWD system constantly monitors wheel speed to recognize signs of potential handling issues.  The system’s software will engage the system before the front wheels lose traction.  The electronically-controlled clutch can transfer up to 50 percent of the engine power to the rear axle when needed.  Plus, the Electronic Stability Control can sense if one wheel begins to slip and can slow that wheel down and sending more power to the wheel opposite which has the needed traction.

Use the Active Control system to choose the best mode for your driving situation.  You can choose how the Atlas handles a variety of different surfaces by varying the engine power and transmission shifting.  Modes includes Onroad, Offroad, Offroad Custom, and Snow.
